Julia Gilbert
Ms. Julia A. Gilbert JD is a 2010 graduate of Wayne State University Law School. Gilbert JD obtained a B.A. in English and a minor in Political Science from the University of Michigan in 2006.
As a law student, Gilbert was a member of the Journal of Law and Society, which is a journal that addresses social policy issues in a legal context. During her time with the Journal of Law and Society, she served as an Associate Editor and on the Executive Board, as a Note Editor. In her first and second year of law school, Gilbert was also a member of Wayne’s Student Animal Legal Defense Fund.
In her third year of law school, Gilbert was introduced to Mr. Matthew Abel JD, founder of Cannabis Counsel, P.L.C, who was a presenter at a medical marijuana symposium held at Wayne State University. Abel JD introduced her to the medical marijuana movement and the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act (MMMA). Gilbert clerked for Abel until she was finished with school, and was sworn in as an attorney.
Gilbert is an associate attorney at Cannabis Counsel, P.L.C. representing medical marijuana patients in criminal defense work all across the state of Michigan. While doing criminal defense work, she familiarizes herself with the business and civil areas of the law that are implicated by the M.M.M.A. Gilbert wants to continue to move in the direction of the latter areas as patients hopefully become more protected under the law, or if the state chooses complete legalization of marijuana.
